Oxidation of biological cell material through endogenous respiration. The initial removal of BOD occurs in 1-20 min. These data can be obtained by contacting waste and sludge at various loading levels for a predetermined period (usually 15 min) and computing absorption less oxidation and synthesis or by extrapolation of growth data plotted in terms of BÖD. The initial removal of BOD is of considerable importance in biological waste treatment since it establishes minimum structural requirements.

2-9. In a variety of industrial waste oxidation systems the coefficient a has been found to vary from 0-35-0-55. In order to complete a material balance with sludge growth according to Equation (2-2) a must be converted to terms of ultimate BOD. It is significant to note that the availability of nutrients will influence the coefficient a\ Wuhrman (1956) found that only 16 per cent of glucose sugar was respired by washed activated sludge in the absence of nitrogen while 50 per cent was respired 41 PRINCIPLES OF BIOLOGICAL OXIDATION when nitrogen was present.

Yeasts and molds will possess a lower nitrogen content. The nitrogen content is measured by the Kjeldahl distillation. Protein content may be computed as the total organic nitrogen measured above times 6-25. This factor is based on an average nitrogen value of 16 per cent for protein. The carbon content of cells is present as complex carbohydrates, etc. and is measured by converting the dry mass to CO2 and H2O in which the carbon is equal to 3/11 of the CO2. The hydrogen content is present as 1/9 of the H2O produced by the conversion.
